The wire break locator is not returnable, all sales are final. We will replace defective wire locators at no charge. WIREBREAK LOCATOR A: GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF OPERATION: The wire-break locator is designed to find breaks in your boundary wire. This is done by using the test transmitter, which transmits two different tones through the boundary wire. On one wire there will be a low tone and on the other wire there will be a higher pitched tone. The receiver is used to pick up these tones. For example, if you are walking along the boundary wire and are hearing the low-pitched tone, the volume of the tone will begin to decrease when you are nearing a break in the wire. After you have gone past the break, the high pitched tone will now be heard, in this way you can find the break within inches. B: PROCEDURE: Step 1: Turn off your transmitter arid disconnect the boundary wires. Step 2: Connect the boundary wires to the Test Transmitter. Step 3: Grounding of the Test Transmitter- THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT. If not correctly grounded, the Wire-Break Locator will not work properly and only one tone will be heard. If your current transmitter is grounded in accordance with the instructions supplied with your underground fence kit, take the ground wire from your transmitter and attach it to the black Ground Terminal on the Test Transmitter. If your current transmitter is not grounded, attach the enclosed wire to the Test Transmitters black Ground Terminal and to a suitable earth ground (6 foot ground stake or to the grounding wire for the house which is usually located near the electric meter). Step 4: Plug in the power adapter to the transmitter and then turn on power. Step 5: Check to make sure there are batteries in the AM receiver. Step 6: Turn the receiver on and tune it to approximately 530 khz. If there is a station that can be heard then slowly turn the dial to an area where there are no stations. Step 7: To find the break in the wire, start by following the wire from the transmitter out into the yard. Where the wire is twisted together you should hear a combination of the two tones. Where the wire starts to go in two different directions, start in either direction and continue to follow the wire. You should now hear one of the two tones (orient the receiver in the direction in which the tone is heard the loudest). Note: If there is a break in the twisted section you may have to hold the receiver very dose to the ground and you will hear only one of the tones. Where the wire begins to go in two different directions, you will hear only one tone all around the boundary provided there is only one break in the wire and it is in the twisted section. Step 8: Continue to follow the wire until the volume of the tone begins to decrease. You may now want to bring the receiver close to the ground and then continue following the wire until the tone changes. The point where the tone changes is where the break is located. If there happens to be multiple breaks in the wire, the volume of the tone will decrease and then no tone will be heard. Step 9: Repair the break in the wire by first stripping the ends of the wires to be spliced. Insert the stripped ends into a wire nut and twist, then pull making sure of a solid connection. Apply a waterproofing compound (like silicone) in and around the wire nut. After the compound dries, you may also wrap the wires and nut with electrical tape to prevent them from pulling loose and to protect them from moisture. If there are multiple breaks in the wire then continue to repeat Steps 8 and 9 until all breaks have been repaired. Step 10: Hook up your original transmitter to the boundary wire and check that the loop light is lit. If the loop light is not lit there maybe another break in the wire. Continue to repeat the wire-break location tests until all breaks have been found and repaired. 400-277 REV A Alternative Method for Finding Wire Breaks 1. Connect both ends of your twisted boundary wire to the first terminal on your transmitter. 2. Measure and cut a new piece of boundary wire that is 1/2 the length of your boundary loop. 3. Connect the new wire to the second terminal on the transmitter. 4. Locate the half- way point along your boundary loop. 5. Cut your boundary loop at the half-way point. 6. Connect the free end of your new piece of wire to either side of your boundary loop at the half way point. 7. Turn the system on and check the range of this smaller loop with the receiver collar. 8. If there is no improvement in the performance of your system, you may assume that there is a break in this portion of your boundary. Because there is a small chance you have more than one break in your loop, you should also try the same procedure for the other side of your loop. 9. Once you determine a section of your boundary loop has a break in it, find the middle of that section and cut the wire. Be sure to re-splice the first cut that you made and make it waterproof by caulking with silicone. 10. Connect the new wire to your boundary loop at the point at which you made the cut in STEP 9. 11. Turn the system on and check the range of this smaller loop with the receiver collar. 12. Repeat STEPS 8 - 11 until you find the damaged section of wire. 13. Replace damaged wire with new wire. Remember that all wire in your boundary loop must be the exact same size and type.

You will need additional wire to run from the transmitter to the perimeter and/or for any interior loops, etc. Above Ground Installation - Save the back-breaking task of burying wire and cut your installation time in half! These instructions will not be included with your pet fence. You should print this page if you are going to use the Above Ground Installation method. A common misconception about "Underground Fencing" is that is needs to be buried "Underground". This unfortunate but understandable misconception often scares many people away from enjoying the freedom that these fences provide both you and your pet. There is no need to spend a weekend burying the wire underground, or paying some one hundreds of dollars to bury the boundary wire when it can be installed above ground in only a matter of an hour or two. Using wire pegs you can "Staple" the wire to the ground. Within a matter of 7 - 14 days the root system of your lawn will grow over the wire and hide it completely from view, essentially "Burying" it into the lawn. Not only does this make the installation of your new pet containment systems hassle free, it also eliminates any potential loss of signal that may result from burying the boundary wire under several inches of dirt, not to mention the backaches and blisters it will save you. The procedure is simple: Step 1: 1. First run your twisted wire from your transmitter out to the beginning of your boundary. 2. Now "Staple" the twisted wire to the ground by hammering in a wire "Staple" every 5 - 6 feet. 3. Now stop and look at the wire. Is it completely flush to the ground all the way to the start of the boundary? If not go and "Staple" any raised areas before proceeding to the next step. The wire MUST completely touch the ground. Step 2: 1.Next, place a "Staple" where the twisted wire and the beginning of the boundary meet (if you have a splice in this area please dig a small hole about 2 inches deep and bury the splice. Then place a "Staple" in the front of and behind the splice to relieve any pressure on the splice) 2. Now walk the wire to the first corner of your boundary and "Staple" it to the ground. Repeat this step for all four corners of your boundary. 3. Next go back just as you did with your twisted wire and "Staple" any raised areas down until they are completely flush with the ground. You are now done!!! It is that simple. You have no need to worry about people tripping over the wire because it is completely flush to the ground and will be completely hidden within 7-10 days. You also do not need to worry about your lawnmower cutting the wire as the blades will never get anywhere near the wire. Nobody cuts their lawns to shorter than an inch, with the vast majority of people keeping them at 2" - 3" inches, the wire is flush to the ground and cannot be cut. There are really only a couple of instances where burying the wire is preferable. If you are putting a fence into a pasture area where livestock such as horses or cattle will frequent, then you will want to bury the wire as their hooves will create breaks. In this case you will want the wire at least 8 - 10 inches underground. If you frequently have your yard aerated you will want the wire at least 5 - 6 inches in the ground. Although if you do an above ground installation you can simply avoid the exterior boundaries when performing the aeration.

There is no need to spend a weekend burying the wire underground, or paying some one hundreds of dollars to bury the boundary wire when it can be installed above ground in only a matter of an hour or two. Using wire pegs you can "Staple" the wire to the ground. Within a matter of 7 - 14 days the root system of your lawn will grow over the wire and hide it completely from view, essentially "Burying" it into the lawn. Not only does this make the installation of your new pet containment systems hassle free, it also eliminates any potential loss of signal that may result from burying the boundary wire under several inches of dirt, not to mention the backaches and blisters it will save you. The procedure is simple: Step 1: 1. First run your twisted wire from your transmitter out to the beginning of your boundary. 2. Now "Staple" the twisted wire to the ground by hammering in a wire "Staple" every 5 - 6 feet. 3. Now stop and look at the wire. Is it completely flush to the ground all the way to the start of the boundary? If not go and "Staple" any raised areas before proceeding to the next step. The wire MUST completely touch the ground. Step 2: 1.Next, place a "Staple" where the twisted wire and the beginning of the boundary meet (if you have a splice in this area please dig a small hole about 2 inches deep and bury the splice. Then place a "Staple" in the front of and behind the splice to relieve any pressure on the splice) 2. Now walk the wire to the first corner of your boundary and "Staple" it to the ground. Repeat this step for all four corners of your boundary. 3. Next go back just as you did with your twisted wire and "Staple" any raised areas down until they are completely flush with the ground. You are now done!!! It is that simple. You have no need to worry about people tripping over the wire because it is completely flush to the ground and will be completely hidden within 7-10 days. You also do not need to worry about your lawnmower cutting the wire as the blades will never get anywhere near the wire. Nobody cuts their lawns to shorter than an inch, with the vast majority of people keeping them at 2" - 3" inches, the wire is flush to the ground and cannot be cut. There are really only a couple of instances where burying the wire is preferable. If you are putting a fence into a pasture area where livestock such as horses or cattle will frequent, then you will want to bury the wire as their hooves will create breaks. In this case you will want the wire at least 8 - 10 inches underground. If you frequently have your yard aerated you will want the wire at least 5 - 6 inches in the ground. Although if you do an above ground installation you can simply avoid the exterior boundaries when performing the aeration.

This measurement tells you where to place the "bottom" of your doggie door. The bottom of your doggie door should be an inch or two lower than the "rise" of your dog. If you have a puppy you will need to install the doggie door flush with the ground; and you will need to re-install it at higher intervals as your puppy grows. Another option is to take an educated guess as to how tall your dog will eventually be, install the doggie door at the appropriate height, and construct a "puppy-ramp" so your puppy can reach the doggie door and go through it comfortably. Once the frame of the doggie door is installed in a wall or door, leave the "flap" off at first. Have someone stay inside with your dog while you go outside. Call your dog through the "hole" (doggie door frame without the flap). When he goes through and comes to you, praise him lavishly and give him a food treat. Now have the person inside the house call him through the "hole." When he gets to them, they should praise lavishly and offer a food treat as well. Do this at least 3 times and no more than a dozen. After this, your dog will know there is a hole in the wall or the door especially for him. Leave the "flap" off the doggie door for one full day. Encourage him to use his doggie door by not letting him use the "real" doors. Instead, you use the real door and say to your dog, "Go to your door!" pointing in the direction of his doggie door. You may need the help of someone inside to "help" the dog find his new door. After a half a dozen times, your dog should like this new game! If you have a very young puppy, do not expect them to learn "Go to your door" for many weeks or months; still give them the command in a happy voice, and have someone inside show them where their door is every time. It sometimes helps if you are outside (after going through a real door) and someone else helps your dog or puppy find the doggie door as you call him from outside. On the second day, install the "flap." Now, you will need to repeat the same exercise as when you first sent your dog through the "hole." But this time, the person on the same side of the door as the dog will need to "push" the flap open for him. Each time the dog goes through the door, push the flap less and less for him. It is important that the dog gets used to the feel of the flap on the back of his head so once your dog has begun going through the door, let go of the flap so he feels it on his head and body as he goes through the door. Eventually the dog will need to push the flap by himself and dogs are usually hesitant to do this at first. He will probably put his nose down by the bottom of the flap and wait for the flap to move (after all, it has up to now). At this point, push the flap slightly so that your dog can see it is a moveable object, let the flap bounce back to the closed position. The best way I can explain it is that you are "poking" the flap using short, quick pokes. This gives the dog a glimpse of an opening and encourages him to poke the door himself. At this stage, some dogs begin going through the door with ease, others become quite excited, but still haven't figured out that they can push the door open. If your dog will not push the door open by himself yet, secure the bottom corner of the flap to the flap itself, or above the doggie door using tape, string, or anything else that works. You want the flap to be on the doggie door, but the corner turned up so that the dog can see a small opening. He should then feel more comfortable pushing the flap open on his own. If your dog needs the corner of the flap turned up, leave it turned up for 1-3 days until your dog is very used to using his doggie door. After 1-3 days, do the exercise again with the entire flap in place. After your enthusiastic encouragement and praise, your dog should be able to push the flap now with no problem
